GOOD TITLES FOR ARTWORS
since 2017 | Acrylic and ink on paper, collage
Sometimes you have the title before you have the work.
You write down the title, something will come along.
At some point you have many titles but still no ideas for works.
It’s a tricky situation you got yourself into.
The solution: Just draw the title and make it a work.
Good Titles for Artworks is an ongoing project about language and art. The starting point was a collection of potential titles for future artworks and the realization that most of them would probably never be used (not at my speed). But I didn’t want to give them up either.
So I started painting the titles myself. Text = picture. Black on white, white on black.
I set no limits to the titles themselves, except the wish that they should not refer to already known slogans. That doesn’t mean, of course, that they are unique and new. Every sentence that can be painted on an A4 sheet of paper has probably been pronounced by somebody before.
At some point, the titles started to become independent until they came to a point where I was not sure if they are still titles after all. Once I committed myself to this project it was impossible to think of short sentences without already pondering their usefulness.
Naturally, that did not stop me from continuing with my small text paintings. So, what remains of the original idea is a growing collection of works and, of course, the title.
