ETUDES (CHAMBER PAINTINGS)

Etudes I call a loose series of small-format paintings that serve one purpose above all: To preserve for myself the joy of experimentation.

These paintings are less about what is painted, but how it is painted. That‘s why the Etudes often show my immediate surroundings, especially the view from my studio window (in different weather conditions, for example), which is why I call them ‚chamber paintings‘.

Despite their seriality, they all deal with different issues, even if these are often not directly visible (e.g. different priming in the paintings with a view of the sky). They are small enough to be completed in a day or two. This gives them a lightness that large canvases, into which a lot of planning and work time goes, sometimes lack. And if they ever fail, they simply disappear under another.
